There are some movies where you immediately think, wow, that souds like it’s going to be great and the end product turns out, for whatever reason, to be as dull as dishwater. The opposite can also be true. There are obviously some clever minds at the Marvel Studios because while Iron Man on paper looks like it will be an easy sell, probably because of all the gadgets and opportunities for movie merchandise, Thor definitely doesn’t. Marvel obviously saw the potential though and those people that said it would never work are now keeping very quiet because Thor actually works very well thank you very much.
It’s had it’s time at the cinema where it performed remarkably well claiming almost $450m in Worldwide box office takings. That’s 200% profit thanks, as it reportedly cost $150m to make. It’s time has now come for the DVD and Blu Ray audience.
The movie is the story of the Norse Thunder God Thor, who has been banished by Odin and stripped of his powers due to starting a war with a race of Frost Giants. Thor ends up on Earth and sets out on a mission to redeem himself by saving the universe (of course) with the help of beautiful scientist Natalie Portman. Things are not as easy as Thor would like though as his scheming, traitorous brother Loki is forever plottings against him.
Most of the dissentors were probably smerking at the choice of Kenneth Branagh for director but the choice turns out to have been inspired because over the top Shakespearean theatrics is probably what this movie needed in order to be a success. Lets face it, Thor flies around weilding a hammer as his primary weapon, so the theatrics needs to be played up. Don’t worry though, Mr Brannagh still delivers the continuity derived in-jokes for Marvel fans a plenty.
If you liked Iron Man and added it to your DVD / Blu-Ray collection then you will also like Thor and if you haven’t seen it yet, I implore you to do so before all the Marvel heroes are brought together in The Avengers.
You may have been wondering for some time what had happened to the sequel to JJ Abrams hugely successful reboot of the Star Trek franchise, especially since it was originally announced that a sequel would follow in the Summer of 2012. Well, unfortuntely a release this year is not on the cards. However, there is some good news. The studio have announced that the movie will be released on the 17th May 2013.
It’s been no secret that the sequel was coming, we just didn’t know when. Casting has been ramping up for some time and with some great new names in the frame. Peter Weller of Robocop fame anyone?
There was a story that Benicio Del Toro was in the frame for a part as Khan but he apparently dropped out of the running due to financial issues. We know that Del Toro was Abrams’ choice for the part so it is unclear at this time whether or not the part will be re-cast or the director will choose a different primary antagonist.
